Kirtipur

Travel time from Kathmandu: 30–40 minutes by road

How to reach: Local bus from Ratna Park, taxi, or private/rental car.

Perched on a ridge with sweeping views of the Kathmandu Valley, Kirtipur is an authentic slice of Newar heritage. Its red-brick houses and narrow stone-paved alleys lead to treasures like the Bagh Bhairab Temple and Chilanchu Stupa. Kirtipur is also a food lover’s delight, with local eateries serving specialties like yomari (sweet steamed dumplings) and samay baji (a festive Newar platter). Visit during Yomari Punhi or Indra Jatra and you’ll find the streets alive with music, traditional dances, and color.

Top things to do:

  • Explore Bagh Bhairab Temple and Chilanchu Stupa

  • Birdwatch at Taudaha Lake

  • Visit Manjushree Park for light hiking and cave exploration

  • Try Newari feasts at Newa Lahana or Harati Newa Kitchen

Food + stay options: Mostly day-trip dining at Newari restaurants; few guesthouses available for overnight stays. Best travel season: Autumn for festivals and spring for blooming views.
